Chapter Forty

Kristin

“There you are.”

The voice mixed with the chimes as Sam stormed into the shop, making her way around the plastic wrap and ripped-up flooring that was part of the ongoing renovation.

“What do you mean?” Kristin asked, rinsing her paintbrush and setting it down.

The piece on her workbench was nearing completion. The purple metallic paint blended with the glossy black surface, creating what she hoped would be a beautiful finished piece.

“I haven’t seen you in forever!” Sam said, coming to a stop a few feet short of the bench. “You’re spending all that time with Blede, the big oaf.”

Kristin giggled. “Yeah, he’s an oaf. But he’s my oaf. Besides, you can’t get mad at me over it.”

“Why not?” Sam pouted.

“Because you’re the one who kept urging me to go out and find someone. Now I’ve found someone. So really, if you want to look at it that way, this whole thing is your fault.”

“I don’t like this conversation anymore,” Sam said crossly.

There was silence for a moment, then they both laughed.

“Seriously though, I miss you. Can we have a girls’ night soon, pretty please? I’ll call the others. Maybe we can go to the bar, and this time you can introduce me to some of Blede’s friends?”

Kristin smiled. “I don’t think it works like that, sorry. They…I don’t know how to explain it. They’ll find you, not the other way around.”

Sam frowned. “What’s that supposed to mean? I’ll be right there. I’ll go talk to them; it’s fine. It worked out for you after all.”

“Yes, I know. What I mean is, that the dr—that is, that his friends are mostly old fashioned.”

Kristin swallowed nervously, wondering if Sam had picked up on her near slip of the tongue.

I need to be more careful. That was too close for comfort.

Kristin worried now that if she did go out drinking with the girls at the Dragon’s Eye Pub again, that she would let something slip about the occupants.

That would be very bad. She had earned Blede’s trust with that secret, and she wanted to keep it. He deserved that much. They all did. It wasn’t her secret to share, so she had to keep her mouth shut.

“Maybe we can go to a different bar,” she suggested, hoping that maybe the offer of going out would be enough to compromise.

Sam pouted. “I just want to see you. Maybe spend a few more nights at home, that’s all. Don’t forget your friends now that you have a man in your life.”

“I won’t forget you,” she said. “Come on. That’s ridiculous. You’re my best friend! That isn’t going to change.”

“It had better not. Otherwise, I’m going to hunt you down and tell Blede all your dirty secrets.”

It wasn’t much of a threat. Blede knew many of them by now. So Kristin just shrugged.

“Right. So, you’re fine with him knowing about that time you ate too much sushi, and then we had to—”

“You wouldn’t dare!” Kristin gasped, standing up in horror. “You swore an oath.”

“I’m sure Blede would just love to know how you got through that four-hour drive after.
